Call for Papers: US EPA Hardrock Mining Conference 2012: Advancing Solutions for a New Legacy
 The conference will provide participants with an opportunity to examine and discuss current and future environmental issues which provide opportunities for efficient resource extraction, mine closure, and for the remediation of abandoned mines. The conference takes place April 3-5 in Denver, CO. Abstracts are due by Friday, Jan 13, 2012. For more information, click here.

River Hero Nominations - Due Feb 3
River Rally 2012 is currently accepting nominations for our 2012 Heroes. River Network's River Heroes Award celebrates rivers and those who protect them by recognizing some of our victories and honoring those who provide us with leadership and inspiration along the way. Update on Rulemaking for Clean Water Act Protection
Last April, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released draft guidance to clarify protection of waters through clearer, less burdensome guidelines for determining which water bodies are to be kept safe from pollution and destruction. Water 2012
Colorado WCOWATER(RGB)ater 2012 is being spearheaded by CFWE with the help of over 200 volunteers to bring awareness and educational water activities to Colorado through a yearlong celebratory campaign. Committees are working on school and university activities, a virtual book club, traveling informational displays, web-based tools, watershed activities, and a traveling speaker’s series. New Events 

Jan 12: Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership Watershed Plan Presentation
After more than three years of continuous work, the Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership (UWP) has completed a draft of the watershed plan for the Uncompahgre River made possible by grants from the Colorado Water Quality Control Division  and the Healthy Rivers Fund. A presentation of the plan will take place at the Ouray Community Center on 320 6th Ave. Doors will open at 6, for the presentation that will go from 6:30 to 8pm. There will be opportunity for public comment.  The plan is available at uncompahgrewatershed.org.

Jan 27-29: The Downstream Neighbor Water Symposium
The Downstream Neighbor Water Symposium features conversations about our connection with the South Platte watershed, each other, the planet, and future generations of all species. Beginning with a very large context of cosmic time (film screening of Journey of the Universe) we will proceed to a discussion of the global status of water (keynote by Maude Barlow) and the creatures like us who depend on water. Then we will focus our attention close to home with local speakers on local issues and what it means to act responsibly on behalf of our downstream neighbor. Select from an array of events, reasonably priced and some free, at http://www.downstreamneighbor.org.

Jan 30-31: California Irrigation Institute Annual Conference
The 50th Annual Conference set to be held in Sacramento, CA on January 30-31, 2012. This conference is honoring 50 years of achievement in California water, as well as focusing on the next 50 years of needed efficiency. To learn more and to register click here.

Feb 15-17: 2012 Tamarisk Symposium
Join the Tamarisk Coalition (TC) and Colorado State University Extension Office for the 6th Tamarisk Symposium. This conference, held every two years, is considered the preeminent conference on the tamarisk and related riparian restoration issues and will bring together nearly 250 land and resource managers, researchers, public and private sectors and others from throughout the West. More info here. Feb 23-24: DARCA Conference
The 10th Annual Convention of the Ditch and Reservoir Company Alliance (DARCA):"Are Your Water Rights in Jeopardy?" will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Colorado Springs. 2012 Nonpoint Source Funding Cycle Announcement
Application Deadline: January 13, 2012

The Water Quality Control Division, Nonpoint Source Management Area (NPS program) and its state water quality partners, the Nonpoint Source Alliance (Alliance) are now accepting proposals for projects to be considered for funding under Section 319(h) of the Clean Water Act. All application forms, instructions and other types of documents necessary to apply for funding can be found on http://npscolorado.com/.

Denver Urban Waters Request for Proposals
Application Deadline: January 13, 2012 
Colorado State Forest Service is now accepting urban forestry grant proposals for projects that will restore or improve waterways in the Denver area – one of seven pilot locations recently selected for federal assistance from the Urban Waters Federal Partnership. This project is intended to restore vital Denver-area waterways including the South Platte River corridor and its major tributaries in the Denver metropolitan area, such as Bear Creek, Clear Creek, Sand Creek and Cherry Creek. Captain Planet Foundation Grants
Application Deadline: January 15, 2012

The Captain Planet Foundation primarily makes grants to U.S.-based schools and organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million. Grants are made for activities that conform to the mission of the Captain Planet Foundation which is to: promote and support high-quality educational programs that enable children and youth to understand and appreciate our world through learning experiences that engage them in active, hands-on projects to improve the environment in their schools and communities. WaterSMART Water and Energy Efficiency Grant Funding Opportunity
Application Deadline: January 19, 2012

A WaterSMART Water and Energy Efficiency Grant funding opportunity is now available. The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking proposals from states, Indian tribes, irrigation districts, water districts and other organizations with water or power delivery authority to partner with the Bureau of Reclamation on projects that increase water conservation or result in other improvements that address water supply sustainability in the West. Urban Waters Small Grants
Application Deadline: January 23, 2012

EPA expects to award between $1.8 to $3.8 million in grants for projects across the country that will contribute to improved water quality and community revitalization. The goal of these Urban Waters Small Grants is to fund research, studies, training, and demonstration projects that will advance the restoration of urban waters by improving water quality through activities that also support community revitalization and other local priorities. 2012 Five Star Grant Request for Proposals
Application Deadline: Feb 15, 2012

This opportunity provides modest financial assistance on a competitive basis to support community-based wetland, riparian and coastal habitat restoration projects that build diverse partnerships and foster local natural resource stewardship through education, outreach and training activities. Scholarship Opportunity for IBCC and Basin Roundtable Members
The Public Education, Participation and Outreach (PEPO) workgroup of the IBCC has made funding available to all Basin Roundtables to offset costs of water education opportunities. The goal of this funding is to provide basin roundtable members with financial assistance to learn about water issues in other basins and statewide, thus transferring information between basins. In this workshop, learn best practices in grantwriting and tips for success. Participants will understand the essential elements included in a grant proposal and how to craft a compelling case for support. The workshop will take place from 9am to 4pm at 444 Sherman Street in Denver, CO.

Feb 5: Watershed to Waterwise Strategies
Following the trend to re-establish these functions in urban areas, this class, through the University of Colorado Boulder, will touch on: watershed catchment and delivery systems, current water use patterns in the west, water in the city, water on the site, water reuse at small and large scales, rainwater capture, urban forest functions and values and climate appropriate plant selections. March 8: Urban Forest to Rain Gardens
In this course, taught through the University of Colorado Boulder, we will walk through a few green technologies taking root in cities today. We'll get up close to: Green Roofs - a great way to reduce energy consumption and increase storm water quality, grow food and attract wildlife; to Rain Gardens- a growing method of cleaning up rain water while growing ornamental and edible plants in urban and suburban yards; to Trees- individually and collectively (urban forests) an easy way for folks to provide shade, reduce energy, grow food, provide habitat, sequester carbon..
