Locally-based field biologists work one-on-one with private landowners and other partners to plan, implement, and monitor their projects. Partners Program field staff help landowners find other sources of funding and help them through the permitting process, as necessary.


National priority ranking factors for the Partners Program are used to assign funding priority status to proposed projects that meet these conditions:


* Improve habitat for Federal Trust Species, including migratory birds; threatened and endangered species; inter-jurisdictional fish; marine mammals; and, other declining species.

Comments Eligibility requirements: Awards are made on a competitive basis to eligible grant recipients, including federal, tribal, state, and local governments, educational institutions, and non-profit conservation organizations. Project proposals are received on a year-round, revolving basis with two decision cycles per year.


Through its Bird Conservation Initiative, the Foundation and its partners seek to stabilize and increase declining (but still common) populations of select bird species or suites of species and accelerate recovery of imperiled species.

The goals of PTI are:
* To prevent, manage, or eradicate invasive and noxious plants through a coordinated program of public/private partnerships.
* To increase public awareness of the adverse impacts of invasive and noxious plants.


The most successful PTI projects typically:
* Focus on a particular well-defined Weed Management Area, such as a watershed, ecosystem, landscape, or county.
* Are supported by private landowners, state and local governments, and the regional/state offices of federal agencies.
* Have a project Steering Committee composed of local cooperators who are committed to working together to manage invasive and noxious plants across their jurisdictional boundaries.
* Have a clear long-term weed management plan which is based on an integrated pest management approach using the principles of ecosystem management.
* Include a public outreach and education component, as appropriate.

Comments The NFF Matching Awards Program provides challenge cost-share awards, on a competitive basis, to community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, to engage in on-the-ground conservation initiatives benefiting National Forests and Grasslands. The Matching Awards Program is unique in that it effectively doubles the money available to forest conservation projects by adding federal funds to private, non-federal matching dollars. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the U.S. Forest Service issued a Stewardship Challenge, calling for all Wilderness Areas in the National Forest System to meet baseline standards by 2014. The NFF, as the official nonprofit partner of the Forest Service, will increase the resources available to meet this challenge by providing matching grants of up to $50,000 to nonprofit partners to implement on-the-ground conservation projects that directly benefit Wilderness Areas within the National Forest System.

* Programs must promote an understanding of local conservation issues, improve scientific literacy, and conform to appropriate academic standards of learning.
* Programs are expected to include an outdoor classroom experience for students and teachers at a National Wildlife Refuge and must also include a community stewardship project.
* Existing conservation education programs are eligible for funding and technical assistance so long as there is a commitment to meet all of the elements of The Nature of Learning framework .
* Preference will be given to start-up programs that can demonstrate a commitment to sustaining the program over time.
* Matching contributions are not required; however strong preference will be given to applications that leverage the grant award with contributions from project partners.

Patagonia primarily small grassroots organizations working to protect local habitat.
